Friday, January 14, 2011...Update
from Ozzie Tollefson...........
I received an e-mail from Melissa
Christen today telling me there are about 20 copies of "Moving Moen School" left, out of the 100 the EPHC ordered.
That's good news and everyone connected with this project appreciates your support. She also told me calls and letters
are coming in from all over the country requesting the DVD. She recently had calls from California, North Carolina
and one from New York that was personally very exciting. An old Navy buddy of mine from back in the 50's
learned about my involvement in the Moen School project on the Internet and wanted to get in touch. I had not talked
to Ski in over 50 years, and it was so good to hear his voice on the phone this morning.
The reviews
of the video keep coming in. Here is one from Jan Hanson of Fosston.....
"I thoroughly enjoyed the DVD you
made of moving the Moen School. Our
oldest granddaughter, Kora was the little girl in the children's choir with the red dress on. She was just beaming last
night as we viewed the video together. I just wanted to thank you for completing the project- it is wonderful!!!!
Two of my aunts were country school teachers pictured in the movie and even though I did not attend a rural school, we
often had the opportunity to visit their schools and partake in their fun programs."
I also received a review from a former student
of mine, John Nutt, who has edited close to 100 Hollywood movies.
"Ozzie - I just watched your DVD. It's
fantastic! You did a really great job. The Heritage Center must have been blown away. The idea you had for a PBS show on the
subject seems absolutely correct - it would have been great (and still could perhaps). I loved the kids singing, and I also
loved the separate interviews and stills at the end. The narrator was very good, a very nice voice and well performed narration.
You've become the Cecil B. DeMille of the North Woods. Thanks for sending it to me. -
John"

Saturday, January 1, 2011...Update from Ozzie Tollefson...
Happy New Year everyone! This should be
an exciting year for the East Polk Heritage Center, as the work of transforming Moen School into a living history
museum will begin. But the task at hand will need funds. One way to help out is to purchase a DVD of "Moving
Moen School."
The reviews of the video are all good. I have received several calls, e-mails and letters from folks all across the
country who have seen it and are amazed by its professional quality. Think of this as a record of local history,
a permanent treasure to be kept and passed down through the generations like a good book. With your $15.00 purchase,
$11.35 goes directly to the Heritage Center. The camera work, the music, the writing, the narration, the cover graphics
and the editing were all done free of charge. Only $3.65 per DVD was paid for making the copies, packaging and delivery.
Think of someone who would appreciate this video as a gift. You will make someone happy and help out on an important
venture to boot.
You may have read in the last 13 Towns, a
wonderful review of "Moving Moen School" by a friend of mine who lives in Gastonia, N.C. Let me share
with you what she wrote....
A dear friend from Fosston, Minnesota, sent me a DVD
on "Moving Moen School." I have watched it four times and each time I get a lump in my throat remembering
the one-room school I attended in the early 40's. I still remember walking to school with a lard pail with my biscuit
and apple butter lunch, the pot bellied stove warming the room in winter, and the outhouse where I always made sure I waited
until another child had warmed the seat, just a little. I was not as fortunate as the group of dedicated adults who
banded together to save Moen School. The last time I visited my school, all that was left were rotting timbers with
trees growing through the remaining planks.
Your endeavor to preserve a beautiful landmark is to be applauded and a big thanks to those who worked so diligently in collecting
funds for the move, which is remarkable in our 'use and toss' society. I send my appreciation to everyone involved in the
making of this informative video and I plan to share it with family and friends over the Christmas season and then it will
be added to my memories collection of times gone by.
Please continue to support this project to repair, preserve and create a museum where future generations may visit and
learn about your educational heritage.
I understand you may purchase a copy by contacting Melissa Christen at 218-435-6454 or send a $15.00 check to "East
Polk Heritage Center, POB 4, Fosston, MN 56542".
Sincerely,
Ann K Belmont

Saturday, November 27, 2010....Update
from Ozzie Tollefson. I have finished editing "Moving Moen School," the 82 minute documentary on bringing
Moen School to the Heritage Center last July 9th. It involved several hours, but I received lots of help,
especially from Lora Lee Saeter, who provided me with important video and Dean Vikan, who was Johnny-On-The-Spot when
I needed still pictures. (See photo below, which is the last shot in the video) Robb Webb, the announcer
for "60 Minutes," volunteered to do the narration, which gives the video a real professional touch. Arna Rennan,
a singer and accordion player from Duluth, offered her Norwegian folk music and Andrea Een, a professor of music at
St. Olaf College, gave us permission to use traditional tunes she has recorded for the Hardanger fiddle. We are
expecting the copies will arrive at the Heritage Center by December 15th. They will make wonderful Christmas gifts for
family and friends. All proceeds from the sale of the DVD's will go to benefit the Heritage Center. Spread the
word!!

Wednesday, November 15, 2010....UPDATE FROM
OZZIE TOLLEFSON. I've spent a lot of time these past three months editing the video on "Moving Moen School."
If all goes well (if my computer doesn't crash) I should have the finished DVD's shipped to the Heritage Center by December
15th or earlier. Lora Lee Saeter has given many hours to this project. Aside from providing me with excellent
video and still pictures, she has rehearsed a group of Fosston youngsters to perform old songs, which I am using
in the video. Lora Lee videotaped their performance inside Moen School on Friday, November 5th. Pictured
below is a photo of the chorus with Moen School all decked out for a Halloween program. The performers are Olivia
Blaser, Clayton Blaser, Jaxon Paulson, Courtney Shaver, Isaiah Miller, Rebeka Ware, Kora Norland, Sierra Lomen, Claire Nelson,
Brenner Riveland and Zackery Radtke. Thanks, you guys!

Monday, July 19, 2010.....Update from Ozzie
Tollefson.....
"Back home in Pennsylvania, I'm going over the 6 hours of tape I shot the week before Moving Day.
I wish to thank Lora Saeter and Ian Sannes for helping me cover the move. I could not be in all places at once, so their
footage will be invaluable in the documentary I'm working on. It will be sold to help raise funds for repairing the
building and turning Moen School into a museum. Look for a finished DVD sometime in November. Gabe Brisbois,
Lori Paulson, Dean Vikan and Betty Puffinburger also provided me with still shots I can use. Thanks a bunch! If
you have any good digital shots of Moving Day, please forward them to me at ozzie@epix.net. I can't promise I will use all of them, but the more I have available, the better. Again,
thanks for all your help!"

Monday, July 12, 2010.....Update
from Dean Vikan.....
"Seen below is a shot of the school just as it touched down on the concrete foundation
at 11:20 on 12 July 2010. Note that we did some repair work over the weekend while the building was up and easy to access.
The movers gave me a heads up on some wood rot that would be lots easier to fix while the school was up on rails than after
it was on the foundation. I was able to get Warren Ohren to work Saturday and Sunday morning fixing the worst of it.
The reason for the orientation of the shot – corner of the building – is to show the alignment
and how accurate things came together. A Hundred years from now, visitors will look at that and say 'Wow, they must
have known what they were doing to get that close a fit!'”

Friday, July 9, 2010, 7:00 p.m........Update from Ozzie Tollefson...
"What a day this way! The move went
off like clockwork, starting with our little ceremony out at Moen School. Phil Ehlke, our emcee, was smooth as silk as he
broadcast the events live over Q-96.7. Carol Wold smashed the champagne bottle as if she had launched a thousand ships, and
Mohler Movers brought the old schoolhouse to the Heritage Center grounds in one piece. We had perfect weather and the large
crowd that turned out experienced a thrilling, historic day for Fosston and a special tribute to rural schools in the East
Polk County area. The early evening picnic was well attended. Everyone enjoyed a good meal and lively conversations. A big
THANK YOU to Dean Vikan for attending to all the details and making sure the job got done. It wasn't always easy, but he never
gave up on bringing Moen School to town."

Thursday, July 8, 2010, 7:00 a.m.......Update from Ozzie
Tollefson....
"Yesterday I was able to do 7 interviews with former teachers
and students who taught or attended one-room country schools in the East Polk County area. My final interview was
with Dean Vikan, who gave me the background on Rosebud Township's generous donation of Moen School to the Heritage Center.
These interviews will be a part of the video documentary I am creating on the Moen School Project. I'm hoping to have
it all edited and ready to deliver to the Heritage Center by November.
This
afternoon I have a meeting with Phil Ehlke, the general manager of Fosston's radio station, 96.7 FM. He has agreed
to emcee our ceremony of invited guests tomorrow, Friday morning, starting sharply at 9:00 a.m. out at Moen School.
Stay tuned to Phil all morning, as he will be doing remote progress reports of the school coming to town.
The weather reports look good for Friday, clear skies, high of 77 degrees. It should be perfect. People have been
asking me what time will the school get to town. We are guessing sometime between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. It's
hard to give you an exact time because of power line issues. But when she rolls in, it's going to be a heck of a sight,
led by a parade of classic vintage cars and a fire engine. Listen to Phil and have an ear open for horns and sirens."
Then come join us for a catered picnic starting at 5:00 p.m. on the Heritage Center grounds. Open to the public, $5.00
per person."

Wednesday, July 7, 2010......Update from
Ozzie Tollefson....
"When Dean Vikan first asked me to get involved in the
Moen School project, I told him I would shoot and edit a DVD documentary on bringing my old one-room school to the grounds
of the Heritage Center. The DVD will be sold by the Heritage Center to raise funds to repair the schoolhouse.
Yesterday I spoke to Lora Lee Saeter, who has offered to help me videotape moving the school to town on Friday. I am
still looking for more help. If you have a digital Camcorder and have Friday free to cover the move with me, please
contact Judy Newton at 563-2021 today or tomorrow.
With two days left to prepare
for Moving Day, Friday, July 9th, I am continuing to tape interviews with former teachers and students of rural schools.
On Tuesday I went over to Clearbrook to interview Arlene Bergman who taught at Sunnyvale School. She was very good on
camera. On Wednesday I taped interviews with Judy Newton and Linda Bakken Jorgenson at Judy's home in McIntosh.
Later that afternoon I spent two hours with my fourth grade teacher, Carol Lee Wold. She is one of two living
persons who taught at Moen School and will play a key role in our ceremony at the present school site Friday morning at 9:00.
She will break a bottle of champagne against a corner of the school to "launch" it on its journey into town
to become a living history museum.
The school is still set to roll out at
10:00 a.m. Friday. Stay tuned to the Fosston Radio Station (96.7 FM) for live coverage of the day's events starting
at 8:30 a.m. We are guessing it will reach Highway #2 some time between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Find a good spot
somewhere between the Fosston Radio Station and the Heritage Center and enjoy the parade into town, but keep the roads open
for the school to pass. It's 32 feet wide and needs plenty of clearance. Leading the parade will be a fire truck
and a string of classic vintage cars. It should be one heck of a sight. I'm excited!"
At 5:00 p.m., come out to the Heritage Center grounds for a catered picnic. It's open to the public, $5.00 per person.
Moen School will be on its new foundation. Bring your cameras and enjoy this important first step in creating a museum."

Friday, July 9th. Tune your radio to 96.7 FM starting at 8:30 a.m. for a remote broadcast of the day's events and progress
of the old school coming to the Heritage Center grounds. I had a meeting with Phil Ehlke yesterday to iron out details.

"The movers want to move Moen School two hours earlier than originally planned. We have adjusted our schedule
accordingly. At 9:00 a.m., we are scheduling a brief ceremony to launch the school on its way into Fosston. The
movers plan to roll out at 10:00 a.m. Follow the progress on 96.7 FM on your radio dial."

Wednesday, June 30, 2010....Update From Dean Vikan....
"The
real, physical aspect of moving Moen School started bright and early this morning. Wayne Zachariason removed the bricks
from the chimney, assisted by several volunteers. These valuable relics are now stored in safe keeping, where they will
be cleaned and used in future projects and fund-raising activities. Thanks, gang...job well done! We also received
good news from Lakeland Public TV in Bemidji. Jamil Donith will definitely be here to cover Moving Day, which
is still set for Friday, July 9th. Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. out at Moen School, followed by rolling out at 10:00 a.m.
We are sorry that Jesse, the new owner of The Stadium, will not be open by July 9th. We had planned a party there
to wrap up the events of Moving Day. We have gone to Plan 'B': a picnic on the Heritage Center grounds. More about
that later.
Stay tuned!"

and students, the movers are scheduled to roll at 10:00 a.m. Keep your radio dial set at 96.7, and you'll
be able to follow the progress of the old schoolhouse from the time it leaves its present site, through the parade into town

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Friday,
June 4, 2010...Dean Vikan update....
"Today the final stage of the foundation
was poured (see photo below). I stated in the last update there would be rows of cement blocks for the foundation walls,
but obviously, I was wrong. In any case, this essentially completes the first major step in the process of moving the
Moen School to the Heritage Center grounds. Another milestone was the submission of the application for a permit
to cross the BNSF (Burlington Northern
Santa Fe) railroad.
We also removed all the ‘school books’ from the library (three boxes full) – they are now stored in my basement
until the school is settled in at the Heritage Center. The books will need a good cleaning before they go back on the shelf –
any volunteers? Doug Fjerstad, one of the Rosebud Township Board members, told me he found his sister’s assignment
in a 5th grade English book in the Moen School library this past week. I expect to find a number of links between ‘then
and now’ before this project is over.
The next milestone in preparation for the
move is to remove the chimney – I’m hoping to get that started this coming week. We plan to salvage as many
bricks as possible and sell them (engraved with country school alumni info) to be used in a ‘walk of fame’ leading
to the school front door at its new location."

Saturday,
May 29, 2010.....Important announcement from Dean Vikan...
"The East Polk Heritage
Center Country School Project showed the first concrete sign of progress (in photo below) with
the footings for the foundation completed, Friday, May 28. During the following week, two to three rows of cement
blocks will be added around the perimeter and fifteen support pillars positioned along the inside support footings.
By completing the cement work now, it will have about a month to cure before the school building arrives on the
current target window of July 9-10.
As we
get closer to the move date and some of the unknowns become knowns, the exact arrival date will be selected. The
log shack in the photo will be removed sometime in June, well before the the schoolhouse arrives."

Saturday, May 22, 2010.....Request from Judy Newton....
"Once the school becomes a museum on the Heritage Center grounds, we plan to display framed pictures of all
the teachers who taught at Moen School.
We'll hang them over the blackboard beside the painting of George Washington. We now have nice photos of Lillian
Affeldt, Carol Lee Wold, Anna V. Olson and Clara Omlid Rutherford, but we need many, many more. If you have photos
of the following former teachers, please contact me at 218-563-2021 or e-mail to newjudy@gvtel.com : Ida Moen in 1921, Ruth Carlstrom, Thorvold Lund, Amanda
Engebretson, Minnie Haltli, Marion Kipp, Agda Peterson in 1928, Mildred Olson in 1938-39, Teresa Ostenna Berge in 1939-40, Sylvanna
Merseth in 1943-45, Mrs. Ophus in 1946-48, Minda Olson, 1949 Thanks, Judy."

Wednesday, May 19, 2010....Update from Dean Vikan, President of the Heritage Center.
"I am glad to announce the low bidder on moving Moen School into Fosston is
Mohler Movers of Bemidji. We have asked for a representative from their company to attend a meeting ASAP at the Heritage
Center with all parties involved in the move. We are hoping the move will come the week following the 4th of July.
Several details regarding the site preparation need to be ironed out, but at this stage of the operation, we
are good to go. More information will follow on the exact date of the move, plus a schedule of events planned
for Moving Day. Moen School is coming to town! Stay tuned."

Tuesday, May 11, 2010...Judy needs help on "CLASSES" page...........
"Help!!
We have a MYSTERY BOY on the "CLASSES" page! Does anyone out there know who the boy is in the 'Moen School
Class Photo of 1951,' second one from the far right in the second row? (marked '?') He is wearing a cap with a visor,
a white T-shirt and bib-overalls, and he has one hand on top of the basketball. Everyone on our staff has tried
to identify the MYSTERY BOY and we are stumped. If you know who the boy is, please email newjudy@gvtel.com and tell me who you are and how you were able to identify him,
(i.e., maybe you are related to him.) Thank you so much." Judy Newton
